I'm interested in pursuing target shooting with service rifles. I really like the M-1 Garand and the M1A although I've never fired either of these. I have a 1903 Springfield bolt rifle, but would like to get an autoloader (not the current black SOCOM types). Other than .223 (AR), what type of service rifles do you guys shoot at the range? For competition? I'm mostly interested in just target shooting for the fun of it (don't know that I would ever want to compete). For those that shoot M-1 Garands or M1A - where do you recommend others buy these type rifles? I'm aware of the CMP program, but it has the requirement about proof of marksmanship training. Also, I'm reluctant to pay for a rifle of unknown condition. I really don't have any real specific requirements, other than a good condition M-1 or M1A that's safe to shoot and has respectable accuracy. I appreciate any suggestions!
thanks!

Swampboy, please don't discount participating in a match or two. The Garand match in May is a low key fun match to go to, plus ammo and rifle will be provided. Also, April is the Bolt rifle match, but I am still trying to get a little more info on it,"see previous thread". Either match would get you qualified for the CMP program. There are always people willing and eager to help at the CCGC matches. Hope this helps. Ron

Thanks for the response.
Are the competitions open to the public? (how does a non-member like myself find out more prior to applying for membership). Or do I have to submit a membership application first and wait for acceptance?
BTW - I live in the Kansas City area, so it's not so easy for me to drop in. Are there other shooters from KC?

All matches are open to the public. Just show up a little early, and if the gate is locked, wait a little bit. After the Range officer shows up the gate will be left open for the duration of the match. I am not sure about home towns. You can try emailing range officers about memberships. With a membership you can go out to practice pretty much any time. Ron.

Hey Swampboy, Ron is right on. The matches are open to the public. The bolt match coming up is for bolt guns only- centerfire-of course. 200 yd weather permitting. I think there will be 10 shots standing- rapid fire 10 shots in 60 sec. sitting ----- 10 shots in 70 sec. prone. and 20 shots slow fire-- Mark correct me if I'm wrong. Nothing begs a fresh hole like a new target....... ;D

April bolt gun match will be 40 rounds all prone. Bring out your rifle from the closet for a fun shoot.
